Asbestos found in nine out of ten NHS hospitals
An investigation has revealed that the cancer-causing substance exists in the buildings of 198 out of 211 trusts.
Asbestos was commonly used as an insulator between the 1950s and 1970s and has since been linked to lung cancer and life-threatening scarring of the respiratory system.
The substance was banned in 1999. However, buildings assembled before this time may have traces of the substance remaining within their construction. If the buildings remain intact, they are considered to be low risk, but if they are disturbed or become damaged, asbestos fibres can be released and breathed in, which is when it becomes dangerous.
The chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Occupational Health and Safety, Jo Stevens, has called for an audit to reveal the extent of the problem.
