Anti-MMR campaigners ‘absolutely wrong’ says England’s top doctor
Professor Dame Sally Davies, chief medical officer, has said that people who believe the myths spread by anti-vaccine campaigners ‘are absolutely wrong’, adding that, despite the fact that the current uptake was ‘not good enough’, the vaccine was safe and had been given to millions of children worldwide.
She urged parents to ignore ‘social media fake news’ and to get their children vaccinated so that they are properly protected.
The vaccine uptake target is 96% and currently only 87% of children are receiving the recommended two doses.
Dame Sally’s comments have come on the 30th anniversary of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine being introduced in the UK.
She went on to say that myths currently circulating on social media were one of the reasons parents were choosing not to have their children vaccinated.
“A number of people, stars, believe these myths – they are wrong.
“Over these 30 years, we have vaccinated millions of children.
“It is a safe vaccination – we know that – and we’ve saved millions of lives across the world.
“People who spread these myths, when children die they will not be there to pick up the pieces or the blame.”
Thanks to the vaccine, cases of measles, mumps and rubella have dramatically dropped in the UK, which has led to the country being declared “measles free” by the World Health Organisation. However, the cases this year are increasing and people who have missed out on the vaccine have been particularly affected.
