Two local NHS trusts are missing all their key waiting time targets
Recent analysis has shown that nearly one in five local NHS services are consistently failing to meet any of their key waiting time targets, and it has been revealed that Leeds Teaching Hospitals and Bradford Teaching Hospitals are amongst those trusts who have not hit their target.
This news comes following NHS leaders expressing concerns that the NHS was facing a very difficult winter and marks the worst continuous period of performance since targets were introduced after the turn of the century.
In England, the target is for patients to be seen within four hours of arrival at A&E, cancer patients are expected to start their treatment within 62 days of an urgent referral, and waiting times for non-emergency treatments are meant to be inside of 18 weeks.
The Royal College of Nursing’s Dame Donna Kinnair, said the NHS was approaching the winter “on the back foot”, adding that research had shown that hospitals were facing a general shortage of staff and beds, and that the sight of “patients waiting on trolleys in corridors” was becoming all too common.
Chief executive of NHS Providers, Chris Hopson, said the health system was under “significant strain”.
